had not heard the name “Malvan” before I came to settle in Mumbai. But fortunately, I got to know about Malvan and few other beautiful places of Konkan region from my colleagues who belong to the Konkan region. Not only Malvan but there are few other amazing destinations in Konkan, Maharashtra which will let you know with different blogs. This blog is entirely dedicated to this hidden treasure in Konkan region.
Southernmost district of Maharashtra, Sindhudurg District has this beautiful town called Malvan. This place is famous for the Sindhudurg Fort. Sindhudurg Fort was built by the prominent Indian warrior the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Konkan region is famous for many reasons. Not only the beaches and hills here are beautiful but also the food of Konkan is very famous. I cannot forget the taste of kokum curry and fish fry I had there.
I went to Malvan in winters around new year’ time. As Malvan is not very far from Goa, I was worried on if the hotels and stays would be booked heavily in advance. Also, as it was on season, I expected the price to be very high.
But contrary to my expectations, the hotels and rooms were available and price were not very much on higher side like Goa. Clearly, Malvan popularity is not very much and that is why the place is not witnessing much footfall even around the on season like new year.
We booked a return train ticket from Thane to Kudal (Railway Station). Malvan does not have its own railway station. Most of the trains which run between Mumbai to Goa stop at Kudal. From Kudal one can take a cab or public bus to reach Malvan in around 1 hour.
Trains which usually run between Mumbai and Kudal are crowded and late for atleast 2 hours. Due to limited rail track in this region. The problem of crowd and delay persist here. So, we took a night train to Kudal. And reached to Kudal around 12 PM. After that we took bus and reached to our booked hotel in Malvan around 3 PM.
We had our lunch and rested for around two hours and moved to our first destination in Malvan.
We reached to Rock garden at our intended time before sunset. As rock garden is famous sunset point in Malvan it will be not wrong for me to say that this experience was really mesmerizing.
Rock garden has many big rocks which are naturally carved with the waves of the sea. Sitting here in warm and airy weather and enjoying the sunset is experience which must not be missed.
Rock garden also has a kid’s part. Also, one thing that caught my attention was this statue of ghost made up with the plastic waste which is thrown by public near sea and beaches.
Nature will give you back. Definitely. One should be responsible enough to dispose the plastic and waste at proper dustbin or place.
Near the Rock Garden in Malvan, Chivla beach is situated just around 800 meters from the Rock Garden. Chivla is a clean and beautiful beach. After witnessing the beautiful sunset at Rock garden, we went to Chivla beach for walking.
Next morning, we wanted to enjoy scuba diving here. As the Malvan beaches offer scuba diving in very reasonable price, we thought of doing the Scuba every morning here till our stay.
Near to the Malvan Jetty, there are many vendors who offers scuba diving and other water sports such as parasailing, snorkeling, banana ride etc.
I cannot say the scuba diving at Malvan was my best scuba experience but it was value for money. Best for the people who wants to experience it and not sure if they can actually do it or not. Because they you wont regret spending Rs. 700 for knowing if you can or cannot.
They had fixed scuba points where they take you via sea boats. Boats are not as we usually find in countries like Maldives, Seychelles. But it doesn’t matter much what kind of boat it is until it’s a motor boat and you don’t have to paddle it.
After thrilling experience of Scuba diving near Malvan Jetty, we spent half day in other water sports offered by them in the package.
A funfilled half day soon ended and we moved to our rooms. Had changed our clothes and came back to Malvan jetty to book a ferry/boat for the Sindhudurg Fort.
Magnificient fort which was built by the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This strategical fort was especially made on an island called Khurte for countering the influence of the foreign forces like English, Dutch, and French.
We get sufficient 1.5 Hrs of time to enjoy the beauty and aura of this gigantic fort in the Arabian Sea.
Tarkarli & Devbaugh Beach
Most popular beaches of Malvan. Tarkarli beach receives maximum footfall of tourists in Malvan. Many people choose to stay near these beaches only as nearby there are some amazing resorts as well as cheap home stays.
Tarkarli beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in India. Beach has white sand and clean and clear water which makes it ideal for people.
Water of Tarkarli has exotic and rare marine life which can be enjoyed with snorkeling and scuba diving. The Devbaugh beach is located just next to the Tarkarli beach. Comparitively, Devbaugh beach has lesser tourists than Tarkarli and that makes this beach even better than Tarkarli to me. I am not a fan of crowd. I love isolation and peace especially when I am close to sea.
