Years ago in 2018 when it came in the news that the Statue of Unity is now open for visitors. I was keen to visit this place. I have been a history buff from longest time. And anybody who has even little bit of knowledge of Indian freedom struggle knows how prominent Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was for our independence and uniting over 500 princely states into the Union of India.
I live in Navi Mumbai but my parents reside in city named Vadodara in Gujarat. It was the time of summer. And my brother who lives in Qatar with his family was visiting my parents in Vadodara. So I too made a plan to visit my family in Vadodara.
And soon we decided to go to Statue of Unity as we all were eager to visit this place from very long time.
Reaching Statue of Unity
From Vadodara, Statue of Unity is just 105 Kilometers so we booked a cab because we had few more family members from my extended family and we could not go in our own car.
Vadodara is best option for the stay of anyone who would want to visit Statue of Unity from outside the state or farther part of Gujarat state.
Statue of Unity is situated around 15 km from Kevadia station which is 85 km away from Vadodara. So Statue of Unity can be easily reached from Vadodara.
Monument can be covered easily in one-day trip. It also has few major tourist attractions close by such as Valley of flowers, Sardar Sarovar Dam.
We went to Statue of Unity on Sunday, so there was rush. And we had to buy Express tickets. There were four types of tickets available at the counter.
- Basic Entry ticket (Rs.150 for adults and Rs.90 for children) – This ticket is for those who want to enter the premises of the Statue of Unity but won’t go to the 500 feet height to see the view from the above.
- Viewing Gallery Ticket (Rs.380 for adults and Rs.230 for children from age 3 to 15 years) – This ticket allows you to access the basic entry benefits and also takes you 500 feet above to ground to the Statue of Unity viewing gallery.
- Express Ticket (Rs.1030 for adult and children) – This ticket gives you the benefits of the Viewing gallery ticket without standing in a queue. It’s preferable for those days when rush is too much.
- Foreigner Express Entry Ticket (Rs.1530 for adults and Rs.830 for the children) – This category is for the foreign nationals and it has all the benefits of above category.
Reaching the Monument
As I told that we went on a weekend and there was huge rush. We opt for the Express ticket and soon we were picked by AC bus that took us to Statue of Unity site from the bus stop near the ticket counter.
There were some issues with the car documents or registration so we could not take our booked car to the actual monument site but its best to take your own car to the site than going by bus.
Outer premises of the Statue of Unity
It was amazing experience to witness such a mammoth statue from far. It stands 597 feets long (182 metres above the ground level). It glimpses were available from the time we start our AC bus journey. And as we come closer and closer the excitement magnifies. There are some shops outside the Staue of Unity including one which clicks and prints a picture for you with the Statue of Unity.
There is shade area for the people to stand in queue to enter the museum. As we had the Express tickets we entered too quickly to the museum. The museum is air conditioned and well-built and designed. Proudly it is one of the best museums of the country for its facilities. Mostly museums in foreign countries are like this except the crowd.
Museum is big and divided in many sections. Museum has over 2000 photographs from the time of Sardar Vallabh Bhai patel. They show a short movie on Sardar Vallabh Bhai patel inside the museum. Mobile and personal camera Photography was allowed in the museum.
We clicked hell lot of pictures inside and outside premises of the Statue of Unity museum. After going through the museum it was time to move to Viewing Gallery. And the huge queue.
Thanks to god for the express tickets that we did not have to wait like others to enter the elevators. We soon reached to top. At the time when we went there 2019 it wasn’t full constructed but probably now the whole floor must have been designed wonderfully.
I don’t remember that if there was air-condition at the viewing gallery which is at 500 feet. But I guess it wasn’t air conditioned and there were wall with the small window blocks to have a sneak peak of places around. It felt good to look down to such a beautiful scene from that observation deck. Only disappointing thing was the lightings at that time were really poor and pictures came really dark and dull.
Around the monument
One can take a simple stairs to climb to the statue’s feet for photographs and scenic view around the statue. It gives you more accurate idea of how gigantic this statue is in front of us.
Laser and light Show
Light show usually happens around 7 PM but that day it started little late around 7:30 PM. Laser and light show was phenomenal and it is actually the best part of Statue of Unity visit. So no matter what it should not be missed. Although it can be started only after the sunset so please plan accordingly. As it’s not worth to miss this outstanding patriotic light show based on Sardar Vallabh Bhai patel.
When I was standing in viewing gallery I saw and helicopter having a round around the monument. We were running late for the day so we could not have the helicopter ride but you can book your ride if you wish to in just Rs.2900 per person. It will be 10 min ride which will show you the view around the Statue of Unity.
Hoping to visit again
When we visited Statue of Unity in the year 2019, there were not many attractions around the Statue of Unity as there are now in the year 2021. Now I am planning to soon visit Statue of Unity again. I will write a new blog on it. Stay updated and please comment if you have been to Statue of Unity and how was your experience? And if not yet visited, plan a visit soon.
