Why “Karnala Fort Trek” – Mumbai Should Not Be Missed?
How badly I resisted Karnala Fort Trek.
How will you feel when you expect something to be a total waste of time but that turns out to be phenomenal? I thought this close by Karnala Fort Trek will not be worth my weekend. But I was wrong.
Thank God I did Karnala Fort Trek.
Won’t you feel happy that you experienced it?
Mesmerized or amazed?
Karnala Fort Trek is phenonmenal
The same feeling I got when I was half the way on the trekking trip of Karnala Fort.
Suddenly my mind went in a flashback to the time when I was indulged in an argument with my hubby regarding this place.
The mood of mine did not want to come to this Fort which is very close to my house. I wanted to explore places that are far away from me.
But as we had limited time this weekend due to heavy workload we finalized on Karnala Fort Trekking.
I Woke Up. I did great!
Even till the morning of Trek Day, I was thinking of stepping back. Fortunately, I went to Karnala to realize how wrong I was about this One-day trek place. This place is fun and beauty at once. The view from the top of the mountain is worth all the efforts you put in to reach there.
Cool Breezes of Karnala
And indubitably the fresh and cool breezes on the top will make you feel calm and poised. After reaching the fort, all I was looking for a rock to lie down and relax. Cool breezes will not let you leave that place easily.
It wasn’t Hard Trek at all.
This trekking spot near Mumbai can be categorized as easy to medium level trekking. It is recommended for all the healthy and fit people. Also, the kids above 10 years can try this one if they are interested in trekking. It should not be done with toddlers and small kids as the pathway are rocky and slippery.
So Where is Karnala?
Karnala Fort is in the Karnala Bird Sanctuary which is located around 10 KMs from Panvel station.
Eco-Friendly Spot? Woah!
I feel the best thing about the Karnala Fort is that it is a plastic-free zone. And you cannot throw plastics in here. At the ticket counter they count the number of plastics you carry inside and while returning you must carry all the plastic waste with you. Although I believe as it is checked by guards and chances of errors by them are high. But as a responsible human being, we all must ensure that we don’t throw any plastic in there.
How we reached Karnala Fort?
First, reach to Mumbai then take local or cab to Panvel station. From there it is around 14 KMs. Autos and vans are easily available from outside the station which will take approximately Rs 200 to drop you to Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Additionally, buses to Alibaug and Pen also stop at Karnala. Buy tickets at the ticket counter and start moving inside the Karnala Bird sanctuary. There is one village type restaurant inside it. There you can have a poha or Upma before starting the trek.
What you must carry for the Karnala Fort Trek?
We carried a few Vada Pavs from there to help us during the trek. And at least 1.5 L water per person must be with you. At that village restaurant, we met many little and beautiful kittens.
After you are ready you can start the trek. There is a road sign from where you can start the trek, there is a washroom in the route. Please get fresh there if you wish to as there are no restrooms or shops or houses available on the top of the mountain.
Know what’s ahead for Karnala Fort Trek.
It will take max 2 Hrs to reach Karnala Fort. On the way, you will get to see so many beautiful birds, insects, and butterflies. Also, you will encounter many beautiful plants and trees. We saw Mickey Mouse flower, Ghost trees, Giant Wood Spiders, so many male and female crabs and lots of colorful birds on our way.
There are 4 mountains which you will be crossing in this trekking. There are rest points in all the mountains where you can relax for a few minutes before climbing the next mountain. On the way, you will also see the temple of Karnai Devi. Karnai devi is a prominent goddess of the local tribe of Karnala.
On top of the Mountain from Karnala Fort.
Once you reach on the top in front of the ancient fort you will see a water tank that is now closed for visitors. Karnal Fort is not in a good condition now but the view from the fort on all the sides is really mesmerizing.
The best thing to do here is just takeout your mat and pillow and lie down. Feel the cool breezes and you will realize greenery everywhere looks how beautiful and satisfying.
Time to return.
Try to rest here till 3 PM then start returning. Especially during rainy seasons try to be careful and slip as path will have wet mud in the way. Once you reach down, do get fresh and take some refreshments at the canteen as the veg thali of here is really delicious.
This is too Affordable.
It is one of the very cheapest trek destinations. A ticket will cost you just around Rs 40, food will be under Rs 100/150 and buses and autos are available at very lost cost from Panvel Station. This under Rs 500 trek is 100 percent worth your weekend.
