NOT JUST A LAKE CITY
My Favorite City
Udaipur has given me so much more than the other places I have traveled in my life. I have not just visited Udaipur but have spent 4 precious years of life here. I am calling those years as precious because those were my engineering college days. College days are special irrespective of cities, I just feel lucky that my special years were spent in most beautiful city Udaipur.
Indian state rAJASTHAN
Udaipur city in Rajasthan is also known as City of lakes as the city is surrounded by lakes. But, Udaipur has much more to offer apart from the beautiful lakes. Palaces with breathtaking architecture, lake side restaurants and cafes, boat rides and few amazing forts on the hills.
Moreover, the artifacts of Udaipur cannot be overlooked. They can be beautiful show pieces for your drawing rooms. Shops of these artifacts you can find all around the city.
Udaipur has its own airport located in Dabok which is around 22 kms from city. Udaipur is also well connected by trains from Delhi (660kms) and Mumbai (800 Kms).
Udaipur Railway station is very close to city and Udaipole. Udaipole has Udaipur’s bus stand and it is one of very famous location because from here you have good connectivity to all parts of Udaipur.
Udaipur By Road
Also, as Udaipur is located in southern part of Rajasthan it is very close to Gujarat border which makes it accessible from almost all major cities of Gujarat. Roads to Udaipur from Gujarat are very suitable for the road trip therefore car trip and bus trips are also a good option to reach Udaipur.
Hotels and Stays in Udaipur
Udaipur has a capacity to accommodate all types of tourists. From very cheap dharamshalas to budget hotels to 5 stars hotels and resorts Udaipur has it all. And trust me staying in anyone of these will be a unique experience. People in Udaipur are very welcoming and generous. Hotel near Udaipole can be a good option because the lanes here are comparatively broad. And thus, the probability of getting stuck in traffic while returning from the day tour gets decreased.
How to Travel within city
Internet has been boon in many ways and google maps are really one of the best gifts given to us in today’s era. Therefore, I feel renting a car or bike is better option any day than hiring a cab with a driver. It gives you a chance to explore this amazing city all by yourself.
Best Seasons to be in Udaipur
Winters is the best season to be in Udaipur. It is also pleasant during rainy season but not recommended in Summers.
Must go places in Udaipur
One of the most visited places in Udaipur for sunset. During sunset people come and sit here and enjoy the cold coffee and other snacks from nearby stalls and shops. During rainy season a waterfall can also be seen near one end of Fatehsagar lake. During our college days whenever I use to feel sad or low, I use to come here and that always helped me regaining happiness and peace. This place has a magic in it as I see everyday so many locals and visitors sitting here for watching sunset. This place never loses its charms in the eyes of people. Even who live in the city from many years love to come here every day.
It is a scenic island garden in Fatesagar lake where you can reach by boating. Boats are available near the Fatesagar lake which takes you to the destination. This beautiful garden showcases various plants, trees and birds. A must go place for people who love bird watching.
Another amazing place for witnessing the sunset or sunrise. Badi lake offers more isolation from the crowd and that makes it a better place. Badi Lake is usually not that crowded like Fatesagar lake. And this one location is mostly included in almost all the pre wedding photoshoots shot in Udaipur. It is a paradise for the love birds. Couples loves this place to spend the quality and romantic time together. Just around 1-1.5 kms from Badi Lake entrance point is a mountain top from where you can see a beautiful view of Badi lake. Same is shown in below picture. I too was here for my pre wedding shoot because I knew this will be an incredible shot.
Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)
Sajjangarh Fort is one my personal favorite places in Udaipur. It is situated high in the Aravalli range and is made up of white marble. It overlooks Pichola lake and the view from the backside of the palace is the main reason why this is included in the best places in Udaipur. If you are in Udaipur during monsoon you can enjoy a stay between the clouds here. Because this place becomes paradise during monsoon. And probably this can be one of the reasons it is called Monsoon Palace.
Saheliyon Ki Baari
It is an ideal spot for family picnic. This place is a beautiful garden having fountains kiosks, structure of elephants made of marbles and a lotus pool. This place has a small museum too. But the beautiful garden is main reason why people love coming here with their families to enjoy the wonderful landscapes.
Undoubtedly, City Palace is most popular place for tourists from all over the world. The main reason why City palace is popular and prominent is its grand structure and magnificent history. This palace has seen many rulers in the course of last few centuries. And the tour introduces you with many amazing facts about these rulers of past. They have an audio guide facility for the tourists who want to understand the palace and its history in depth. Although the audio guide is created in a way that its more suitable to foreigners as audio guide explains you the very basic facts too such as who is lord Shiva or Lord Ganesha. But Indians too can use it for knowledge.
It is another prominent and grand palace of Udaipur which is located on an island in Pichola lake. It is also known as Lake Garden Palace. As this palace is located in middle of lake, we can reach via boat only. You can take boat from Bansi Ghat. It has a restaurant Darikhana which serves delicious and mouthwatering Rajasthani cuisines.
Temple dedicated to lord named Eklingji aka Shiva. Here the god idol is black stone statue which has 4 heads and is 50 feet tall. Apart from this amazing grand statue of Eklingji aka Shiva there are other beautiful idols of goddess Parvati, lord ganesha, lord kartikeya and nandi is also present.
Pichola Lake and its boat ride
This one is another favorite thing about Udaipur for me. From Pichola lake there are boat tours which offers you half hour boat ride in Pichola lake. During Sunset hours it is one of the best things which should be done. The boat rides are of 2 types and the costs are very affordable.
Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandir
This is a cultural museum which showcases art and cultures of state Rajasthan. This place is really informative for people who keeps interest in art, culture and literature.
Bagore Ki Haveli
This is another heritage site situated at Gangori Ghat of Pichola Lake. You can visit this place as it is now a museum and also it offers many cultural programs for the tourists. The Haveli has over 100 room decorated with mirror work and mural on walls and doors. Museums has 5 sections which showcases puppetry, weaponry, Indian weddings and Dharohar dance show too.
Doodh Talai Musical Garden
It is a beautiful rock garden which is also known as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park. Also, it is famous for beautiful sunset views and musical fountain shows which can be experienced between 6 PM to 8 PM.
On the top of hill Moti Magri, Maharana Pratap memorial has been constructed. The memorial statue is made up of bronze and it showcase the courageous Maharana Pratap mounted on his horse Chetak. Another reason why you must visit Moti Magri in Udaipur is the view from here. You see the beautiful Udaipur city from here and the view is undoubtedly mesmerizing.
It is located very close to Udaipole and during the morning hours there is a famous shop nearby Gulab baug which offers delicious paratha in the city served with dal, curd and lots of butter as a topping on the parathas. That shop earlier had a lari very close to Gulab baug entrance gate. But because of that delicious parathas that chef became so popular among the college students of Udaipur that now he has now a nice shop. And we may hope that in future he can have multiple outlets in Udaipur.
Gulab baug has a nice library and museum inside the garden. It is an peaceful and lovely spot to be in.
Last but not least
Vintage Car Museum
It is located just opposite the Gulab baug. Many vintage cars are available here which were owned by Maharanas of Udaipur. Some cars are many years old but very well mainted. It has a entry free around Rs 300. But you get to see many vintage and luxurious cars, a solar powered auto rickshaw and many other specimens inside.
Best Restaurants in Udaipur
I won’t give you many options here. If you are a non-veg lover Ambrai is the perfect place for you and if you like Veg food you may choose Ambrai or Upre 1559, the roof top hotel. But there are the hotels I am not recommending you for the food they offer. I am recommending you these restaurants for the ambience and set up they offer. Just be on safe side and book a table in advance to make sure that your table is exactly lake side. From here you get the best view of Pichola lake and palaces in it. And the ambience here will make you fall in love with Udaipur.
If you are traveling with your love interest you must try the romantic date here.
There are some of the lovely places in Udaipur where you can spend time with your family or loved ones. For me Udaipur is like a 2nd home. I always love to go this place again and again and I never get bored of it. I want you too to make some memories here. Because only memories last forever.
